A Woman's Worth...A Funny Sacred Travel Story From On the Road to Sacred Sites

A Woman’s Worth...A Funny Sacred Travel Story

By Karen Tate

Roy, my husband, and I were leading a sacred goddess tour to the Middle East. When we arrived in Israel we were taking the group to various archaeological sites and places associated with goddess when a young local man who seemed to be about thirty years of age approached my husband. He gestured for my husband to step aside from the group and I could see the man gesturing toward the me and the other women with us. I saw a strange look come over Roy’s face, then with a smile he shoo-ed the young man away. The man obliged but he departed with a disappointed look on his face.

When Roy came back to the group I asked him what that was all about. He said, “Well you’re not going to believe this but he was negotiating a purchase price for you. He wanted to purchase you in exchange for 50 camels!”

Flabbergasted I said, “Only 50 camels!” Honestly not comprehending the value.

Well, I didn’t know if that was a hefty price or a sale price and it’s always made me wonder…

Needless to say we had a good laugh and I’ve told that story many times over the course of sharing tales of our travels. Each time I did however, I made a mental note to look into the proposed purchase price. Eventually, tired of wondering, I did go online and check out the value of 50 camels, but I didn’t get any closer to an answer. Seems the value of a camel really varies according to species and the country in which the camels are being sold.

In the picture above I'm actually riding a camel in Petra, Jordan instead of being traded for a herd.
